ABSTRACT :
Abstract Historical relations between Bakumpai language in Marabahan enclave, South Kalimantan Province and in Buntok, Central Kalimantan Province is assessed quantitatively as an effort to clarify the status of the Bakumpai Marabahan enclave. The Bakumpai Marabahan enclave is hypothesized to be members of Malay language differed from the Bakumpai in Buntok that has the closeness of kinship with the Dayak language. It is done because their opinion is still confusing among linguists. The status of the enclave appears in the Wurm’s map (1983), in accordance with the opinion of anthropologists Mallinckrodt (1928) and Sellato (1980), which classifies Bakumpai Marabahan enclave as members of Malay languages. Based on the quantitative evidence, it can be found that Bakumpai Marabahan enclave and Bakumpai in Buntok is closely allied as a member of a group of the same language. The language is Bakumpai which consists of Marabahan and Buntok dialects. Thus, these results verify Hudson’s hypothesis that classified the Bakumpai language as members of the subgroup of Dayak language. Keywords: lexicostatistics, quantitative, enclave, historical relationships and diachronic analysis.
